Flower power protest hits downtown Tokyo

In defiance of the
city’s government and its post-March 11 demands, some 300 Tokyoites
gathered in a park in front of the iconic Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
in Shinjuku on Sunday to have a little fun.

The brainchild of
film critic Tomohiro Machiyama, this wasn’t your usual protest. Instead of
masks, armbands, and signboards, the participants came in casual wear, bearing
plastic sheets, snacks and plenty of booze.

The peaceful — if
slightly buzzed — sit-in was organized to shame government officials for their
widely condemned requests to refrain from cherry blossom viewing parties.

Hot Spots in Japan – Travel in Japan Cherry Blossom festival Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) has been a Japanese custom since the 7th century when the aristocrats enjoyed looking at beautiful sakura and wrote poems. Sakura is a symbol of Japan, and it’s said that there are over four hundred varieties of cherry trees in Japan. The most popular kind of sakura which can be viewed everywhere in Japan is somei-yoshino (Yedoensis). Japanese cherry trees do not yield fruits like other cherry trees. Hanami “flower viewing” is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the beauty of flowers, “flower” in this case almost always meaning cherry blossoms , or ume blossoms From mid January to early May, sakura bloom all over Japan. The blossom forecast is announced each year by the weather bureau, and is watched carefully by those planning hanami as the blossoms only last a week or two. In modern-day Japan, hanami mostly consists of having an outdoor party beneath the sakura during daytime or at night. Hanami at night is called yozakura . In many places such as Ueno Park temporary paper lanterns are hung for the purpose of yozakura. This is Cherry Blossom Festival held in Japanese Chiba Castle.
