Kyoto without the crowds: Escape like a local

Japan’s ancient capital Kyoto draws crowds of visitors at all times
of the year with its sheer abundance of attractions. Countless temples,
traditional gardens and Imperial villas appeal to tourists of all stripes.
Still,
it can sometimes be a little much — whisper it quietly, but there are far too
many interesting places to even try and pack them all in on one trip and far too many eager travelers trying to do so anyway.
Instead, insiders
often prefer to explore some of the less-frequented but equally intriguing
sites in Kyoto’s mountainous suburbs.
Here
are five must-see destinations just a short train or bus ride away from central
Kyoto.
Ancient capital Kyoto offers visitors trad comedy with English subtitles

It’s well
known that Kyoto, in western Japan, draws millions of tourists annually, both
from the Tokyo area and abroad, but perhaps not that visitors this Golden Week
can add a comedy side to the stodgy traditional fare of temple treks and
bunraku puppet shows.
A new program
of comedy shows begins May 3 at the Yoshimoto Gion Kagetsu theater under the
direction of Yoshimoto Kogyo, an agency that runs venues in Tokyo, Osaka and
Hiroshima.
Exploring the sacred grounds of Kyoto and Nara

I dream of traveling the world -– experiencing rich cultures and learning new things. Walking past innately sculptured ancient architecture, smelling their local dishes and taking a leap of faith by embracing their traditions.
You’ll never know what realization you will get until you start your journey.
I decided to go back to Japan after visiting Tokyo two years ago. This time, I decided to lose myself in the old streets of Kyoto and Nara.
The cultural charm of the place envelopes you wherever you go. So just brace yourself, and trust your gut — take a big gulp and prep yourself up to have an adventure because Kyoto and Nara nurse a number of World Heritage Sites -– each with its own story.
From Tokyo to Kyoto to Koyasan and back

Liz and Dave came to visit us in Japan and I decided the best way to record our vacation would be to tape everything we did for no more than two seconds. I wasn’t very sure how it would come out and some takes had to be longer than two seconds, but I think the end result is effective. Cindy and I traveled from our home towns in Fukushima prefecture on Tuesday, March 20th to Tokyo, where we met Liz and Dave at the hostel. The next day we went to Kyoto to do some sightseeing for a few days. Then we went to Himeji Castle in Hyogo prefecture. We followed that up with a trip to Koyasan – a Buddhist retreat – for one night. Our last full day together we spent traveling by train back to Tokyo. Liz and Dave left Japan on March 26th. Highlights of our trip : We visited Kyoto Tower, Sanjusangen-do temple, Kiyomizu temple, Rokuon-ji temple (more commonly known as “Kinkaku” – the Golden Pavilion) in Kyoto. We visited Himeji Castle in Hyogo prefecture and Mount Koya (Koyasan) in Wakayama prefecture. In between we ate Japanese food, sang karaoke and rode a lot of trains. Enjoy!

Estacao de Kyoto… um passeio muito agradavel nessa cidade que adoro tanto. Eu, Alex, Sean e Nick (de Taiwan), Kenji… Kyoto Station (京都駅, Kyōto-eki) is the most important transportation hub in Kyoto, Japan. It has Japan’s second-largest train station building (after Nagoya Station) and is one of the country’s largest buildings, incorporating a shopping mall, hotel, movie theater, Isetan department store, and several local government facilities under one 15-story roof. It also housed the Kyoto City Air Terminal until August 31, 2002.
