Kinugawa Onsen

As
temperatures nosedive toward winter, it’s an unusual Tokyoite who’s not
thinking about weekend hot spring escapes. But if the over-visited Hakone is
sounding a little too ho-hum and nearby Atami’s been done, then why not head
north to Tochigi and the quirky hamlet of Kinugawa Onsen?

Devil
of a time

Kinugawa
Onsen sits atop the rocky banks of the Kinugawa River, which is usually
translated as “Angry Demon River.” As you might imagine from the name, the
waters are lively, and taking traditional wooden boats out into the rapids is a
popular activity for visitors.

All
the boats have vinyl sheeting attached to the sides so riders can shield themselves
from the spray, so don’t worry about getting soaked.

mind billowing smoke and burning nuclear power stations, but there’s another
side of this gorgeous part of Japan — its superb hot-spring resorts, all
within easy reach of the capital.

Japanese monitor the first signs of spring

The coming of spring is being closely monitored by scores of volunteers in Japan, anxiously awaiting the first signs of cherry blossom season. Cherry blossom season not only indicates the coming of spring, but is an important indicator for Japan’s tourism industry as it helps cities plan annual cherry blossom festivals, travel agencies to schedule tours, and ordinary people to set dates for often raucous parties under the trees. This year, Japan’s national obsession with the timing of the flowering of the pale pink blooms, called “sakura” in Japanese, will depend on private weather companies and their volunteer recruits, after the Meteorological Agency decided to end its official forecasts that began in 1955. At least 15000 people have been submitting pictures of how buds on the cherry trees are doing via mobile phones. The photos are then analaysed by the weather specialists and predictions about the start of the cherry blossom season are broadcast on a special daily television programme. Al Jazeera’s Divya Gopalan reports March 20, 2010

JAPAN TRIP - Spring cherry Blossom Festival flower viewing 春 桜 満開 桜祭り 花見

Hot Spots in Japan – Travel in Japan Cherry Blossom festival Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) has been a Japanese custom since the 7th century when the aristocrats enjoyed looking at beautiful sakura and wrote poems. Sakura is a symbol of Japan, and it’s said that there are over four hundred varieties of cherry trees in Japan. The most popular kind of sakura which can be viewed everywhere in Japan is somei-yoshino (Yedoensis). Japanese cherry trees do not yield fruits like other cherry trees. Hanami “flower viewing” is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the beauty of flowers, “flower” in this case almost always meaning cherry blossoms , or ume blossoms From mid January to early May, sakura bloom all over Japan. The blossom forecast is announced each year by the weather bureau, and is watched carefully by those planning hanami as the blossoms only last a week or two. In modern-day Japan, hanami mostly consists of having an outdoor party beneath the sakura during daytime or at night. Hanami at night is called yozakura . In many places such as Ueno Park temporary paper lanterns are hung for the purpose of yozakura. This is Cherry Blossom Festival held in Japanese Chiba Castle.
