Journeys to the edge: Tourism in Fukushima makes more sense now

Iwaki
City is a cluster of exurban hamlets about 200 kilometers north and east of
Tokyo, on the coastal Hamadori region of Fukushima Prefecture.
A
few years ago I rang for a taxi from my apartment in Iwaki to the train station
in the middle of town. I forget where I was going, but I do recall with great
clarity the conversation I had with the cab driver.
It
was a windy day. From my veranda I could see the metal marquees of the
neighborhood shops flailing in the wind. Power lines and traffic signals, too,
swung wildly in the breeze. From above, I saw the taxi park in front of the red
brick walk-up, a placed called Maison Kuramae, that I called home.
Japanese tourism chiefs out to woo visitors with disaster updates

Oh, to be a fly on the wall at a recent meeting of the
government tourist body in Japan when it discussed one of the least palatable
aspects of the drive to win back overseas tourists: how to warn them about future
disasters.
There’s no denying it’s a desperately difficult task faced by
the Japan Tourism Agency
(JNTO) in the wake of March 11, but we’re not sure launching a prominent
disaster-warning service will actually encourage many (any?) more travelers to
visit Japan.

Single females mean big bucks to Japan tourism

If proof were ever needed that women in
traditionally conservative Japan are striking out more on their own, then look
no further than a new survey showing that increasing numbers of female
travelers are choosing to hit the road solo and travel alone.
The finding comes courtesy of something
called the Jalan Research Center, a part of the Recruit-owned Jalan.net hotel-booking website, which
specializes in domestic travel in both English and Japanese.
Younger, too
It reckons 9.8 percent of women traveling
inside Japan in 2010 did so alone — that’s up from just over 8 percent five
years earlier.

Open a Tokyo newspaper most any day and you’ll find a story about a very
real crisis facing Japan that threatens a disaster of Biblical proportions in the
next few decades.
The country’s population is shrinking and getting old at alarming speed –
the so-called “graying” of a nation.
The National Institute of Population and Social Security
Research estimates that if this trend continues, the total population will dip below
100 million in 2046, causing grave problems for the labor and
consumer
markets, while increasing the burden on social security, medical services
and pensions.
West Japan tourism in roaring good health

So, which is it — Japan’s tourist
industry collapsing in the aftermath of March 11, or business as usual?
The truth, it appears, is that there’s
something of a national divide, with tourism in the east and northeast of the
country understandably struggling to overcome the negative images of tsunami
devastation and nuclear leaks.

flatlines as visitors avoid Japan
Meanwhile, the western part of the nation
– particularly Kyushu and Kansai — seems to be returning to something
approaching normal, at least in terms of visitor numbers.

Close on six months after the March 11
disasters hit northeast Japan, the official numbers for overseas tourists visiting
the country look even bleaker than expected.
According to the Japan Tourism Agency — a
part of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism — spending
by incoming visitors in the April-June quarter was down 46.9 percent on a year
earlier.
Chinese
cash
In total, the foreign tourist buck was
worth an insignificant ¥121 billion ($ 1.6 billion) in the quarter, most of it coming
from near neighbors in Asia.
Japanese tourism fad: Factory tours

For those who think they’ve “done Japan,” forget Harajuku. Forget Tokyo, for that matter.
Head straight to Kawasaki, an industrial city sandwiched between Tokyo and Yokohama, where an alternative tourism fad is emerging.
Kojo moe or “factory infatuation” refers to the booming popularity of bleak industrial zones as tourist destinations.
A growing number of shutterbugs are finding the illuminated steel furnaces and smokestacks of Kawasaki so alluring that they’re signing on for night cruises and day tours just to gape at them from afar.
