Tokyo day trip: Earn your sake spurs at a working brewery
November 27, 2011 by JapanGuide
It’s late November, it’s cold as all get-out and the sake season has begun. Sake’s popularity has been on the rise around the world for several years and many people tend to view it as “the new wine.”
Sake is not wine, however, nor is it a beer or a spirit, though it shares many qualities with all three beverages.
Kamakura death trip: The holy city’s most haunted hangouts

Kamakura,
a beautiful beach city 50 kilometers southwest of the capital, has long been
the day trip of choice for Tokyoites in the mood to get out of the big city in
a hurry.
Ask a
dozen people for their favorite stops and you’ll inevitably hear about famed
holy sites like the Daibutsu (Great Buddha) statue of Kotokuin Temple or the
opulent Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine.
These
places are great and definitely worth a visit, but there’s a darker, less well-known
side of this storied destination as well — a place where history and horror
meet. The spots on our alternative tour aren’t exactly secret, but they sure aren’t
on many tour lists either.

Two guys and a van: Japan’s cheapest road trip

Half a
year had slipped away since I’d last seen my Aussie pal Peach. We were long
overdue for some good times.
After a
vagrant couple of months bumming around northern India, I wound up at Peach’s
apartment in Fukushima, stone-broke and in need of companionship. It was the
beginning of winter 2010, a few short months before the quake.
We
crowded ourselves around a kerosene stove for warmth. With beers in hand and
cigarettes dangling from our lips, we hatched a plan.
The thing
is, both Peach and I had an embarrassingly small amount of money. Our
disposable income, pooled, was only ¥38,000 (US$ 500) — a sum that could be easily blown
away in a single evening on nice dinner and lodging for two.
Tokyo day trip: Hell on earth at Owakudani

“Welcome to hell.”
It’s hardly the most appealing of tourist slogans, but according to official Owakudani sightseeing literature, that’s exactly where I was, even though my map said I was only 100 kilometers out of Tokyo, in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture.
More to the point, I could believe the claim — at least in part — with my eyes watering from rotten sulfuric gases.
Clutching my remaining black eggs (more on those later), I made my way back to the ropeway that would airlift me out of the stench and back to reality.
It’s in the name
As they say in many a business, it’s all about location, location, location.
When it comes to location, Owakudani valley is definitely hot.
Road trip on the Nakasendo highway: Japan’s route 66

The Nakasendo Highway — or central mountain route — is an overnight road trip out of Tokyo that takes you out of the city chaos and into the past.
Running through the Kiso Valley it is an eighth-century road once used by feudal lords and their posse to walk between Edo and
Kyoto. The highway consisted of 69 post towns, or juku, where weary travelers
could rest before continuing on the next leg of their journey.
Not all 69 juku have been preserved but in two days, all you’ll need
are three.
Medvedev’s Kuril trip gives Japan another island headache

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev became the first Russian leader to visit the Kuril Islands when he set foot there today, despite requests from Japan for him not to do so.
It reopens a dispute over what Japan call the “Northern Territories” in the middle of ongoing friction between Japan and China over the southern Senkaku Islands.
#6 – Not So Japanese Euro Trip

Decided to take a time out and travel around Europe while im still young. I modeled this trip after the movie (lol ok no I didn’t). Just as a disclaimer, this has absolutely nothing to do with Japan. It is simply Fabian and I touring around France, Italy, Croatia, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany and Amsterdam. Enjoy the randomness and potential hilarity that is normally associated with Cruxay videos. Cheers Note: creative commons music used in this video! 1) Home Tonight – DoKashiteru 2) Ditto Ditto – DoKashiteru

台湾新幹線700T型をはじめ、蒸気機関車DT668(日本のD51)、CK124(日本のC12)、CK101、CT278(日本のC57)、CT152(日本の8620)などを見ました。 From October 24th to 28th, I went from …

Lake ashi is a scenic lake in the Hakone area of Kanagawa Prefecture in Honshū, Japan. I have been there with my girlfriend, it’s such a beautiful and extraodinary place to travel. The lake that lies along the southwest wall of the caldera of Mount Hakone, a complex volcano. The lake is known for its views of Mt. Fuji and its numerous hot springs. Several pleasure boats and ferries traverse the lake, providing scenic views for tourists and passengers. One of the boats is a full-scale replica of a man-of-war pirate ship. สําหรับใครที่อยากไปเที่ยวญี่ปุ่นแบบสบายๆ ได้ประสบการณ์เต็มที่

Vid on how long it took me to learn Japanese: www.youtube.com Hey all, a question I got asked a lot after my first vid was how I learned my Japanese. The good news is that I was not an exchange student, I didn’t grow up in Japan. In fact, I didn’t even do very well at Japanese in Uni (my university lecturer “advised” me not to take third year Japanese)…. I kind of threw away the study approach and started learning in my own way, which worked well for me, although in a way that disproportionately fostered speaking ability over reading and writing ability. I found it fun and personally rewarding to work with, live with, and hang out with Japanese people a lot before even coming to Japan, and it paid off for me. Bad news is that, especially when you come to Japan, full immersion can be exhausting and mind numbing. But again, my advice is this – do not give yourself a break, at least in the beginning. As soon as you force your brain to begin clicking over in 5 year old Japanese, instead of your 20 or 30 or how ever many years English, everything will get easier, and like being a child again, your ability to understand and express yourself with better vocab will grow naturally. Some people can do it, but memorizing long lists of kanji and vocabulary, while a great preparation, just didn’t work for me without the connection to how I NEED to use those words. As for the JPLT exams, my advice is this. 1) If you are studying outside of Japan, go for level 3 first. It shows basic …
